VAYANATTUKULAVAN / THONDACHAN ‘വയനാട്ടുകുലവൻ’ അഥവാ ‘തൊണ്ടച്ചന്’
ഉത്തര മലബാറിലെ തീയ്യ സമുദായക്കാരുടെ പ്രധാന ആരാധനാമൂര്‍ത്തിയും ആദി ദേവനുമാണ് വയനാട്ടുകുലവന് എങ്കിലും ഈ തെയ്യത്തിനു നായര്‍,നമ്പ്യാര്‍ തറവാടുകളില്‍ സ്ഥാനങ്ങളും കോട്ടങ്ങളും ഉണ്ട്. തീയ്യ സമുദായത്തില്‍ പെട്ടവര്‍ ഈ തെയ്യത്തെ തൊണ്ടച്ചന് തെയ്യമെന്നും വിളിക്കും. തൊണ്ടച്ചന് എന്നാല്‍ ഏറ്റവും മുതിര്‍ന്ന ആള്‍ എന്നാണ് അര്‍ത്ഥം വണ്ണാന്‍ സമുദായക്കാരാണ് ഈ തെയ്യം കെട്ടുന്നത്. കവുങ്ങിന്‍ പൂവ് പ്രസാദമായി നല്‍കുന്ന ഈ തെയ്യത്തിന് തോറ്റം, വെള്ളാട്ടം, തെയ്യം എന്നിങ്ങനെ മൂന്നു അവതരണ രീതിയാണുള്ളത്. കാവുകളെക്കാള്‍ തറവാടുകളിലാണ് ഈ തെയ്യം കൂടുതലായും കെട്ടിയാടുന്നത്‌. കണ്ണ് കാണാത്ത വൃദ്ധ രൂപിയായ ഈ തെയ്യം വിളിച്ചാല്‍ വിളിപ്പുറത്തെത്തുന്ന ദൈവമാണ് എന്നാണു വിശ്വാസം. പതിഞ്ഞ താളത്തോടെ പതുക്കെയുള്ള ഈ ദേവന്റെ നൃത്ത ചുവടുകള്‍ കാണേണ്ടത് തന്നെയാണ്.
പരമശിവന് സ്വന്തം ജട പറിച്ചു തന്റെ ഇടത്തെ തുടയില്‍ അടിച്ചപ്പോള്‍ ഉണ്ടായ മകനാണ് വയനാട്ട് കുലവന്‍ എന്നും അതല്ല ഇടത്തെ തുട പൊട്ടിതെറിച്ചു വന്ന മകനാണ് വയനാട്ടുകുലവന് എന്ന തൊണ്ടച്ചന് എന്നും പറയപ്പെടുന്നു.
കൈലാസത്തിലെ മധു വനത്തില്‍ ഉണ്ടായ മൂന്ന് കരിംതെങ്ങുകളുടെ ചുവട്ടില്‍ ദിനവും ‘മധു’ ഊറി വരാറുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. വേട രൂപം ധരിച്ച പരമശിവന് വേട്ടയ്ക്കായി കാട്ടിലെത്തിയപ്പോള്‍ ഇത് കാണുകയും ‘മധു’ കുടിച്ചു മത്ത വിലാസം ശിവ ഭ്രാന്താടുകയും പാര്‍വതി ദേവി ഭയപ്പെട്ടോടുകയും ചെയ്തുവത്രേ.
തോറ്റം പാട്ടില്‍ ആ ഭാഗം വര്‍ണ്ണിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത് ഇങ്ങിനെയാണ്‌:
“വേടരൂപം ധരിച്ചുള്ള കൈലാസ നാഥന്‍
വേട്ടയ്ക്കായെഴുന്നള്ളി വനത്തില്‍ പുക്കു
കണ്ടുടനെ കരിംതെങ്ങിന്‍ കുറുംകുലമേല്‍
മധു പൊഴിയും വാനുലോകം പൊഴിയുന്നല്ലോ
അത് കണ്ടു പരമശിവന് അടുത്ത് ചെന്നു
മധു കുടിച്ചു മത്തവിലാസം ശിവഭ്രാന്താടി
അത് കണ്ടിട്ടചലമകള്‍ ഭയപ്പെട്ടോടി”
ദിനവും മദ്യലഹരിയില്‍ എത്തുന്ന പരമശിവന് ഇതെവിടെനിന്ന് ലഭിക്കുന്നു എന്നറിയാന്‍ ശ്രീ പാര്‍വതി അന്വേഷണം തുടങ്ങി. കൈലാസത്തിനടുത്തുള്ള മധുവനത്തില്‍ നിന്നാണ് ദേവന്‍ കുടിക്കുന്നതെന്ന് ദേവി മനസ്സിലാക്കി. ഇത് തടയണമെന്ന് ദേവി മനസ്സിലുറപ്പിച്ചു. അതിന്‍ പ്രകാരം ദേവന്‍ കുടിക്കുന്ന കരിംതെങ്ങുകള്‍ കണ്ടെത്തുകയും അതിന്റെ ചുവട്ടില്‍ നിന്ന് ഊറി വരുന്ന മധു തന്റെ മന്ത്രശക്തിയാല്‍ തടവി മുകളിലേക്കുയര്‍ത്തുകയും ചെയ്തു. എന്നാല്‍ പിറ്റേ ദിവസം ‘മധു’ കുടിക്കാനായി വന്ന ശിവന് ‘മധു’ തെങ്ങിന്‍ മുകളിലെത്തിയാതായാണ് കാണാന്‍ കഴിഞ്ഞത്. ഇതില്‍ കുപിതനായ പരമശിവന് തന്റെ ജട കൊണ്ട് ഇടത്തെ തുട മേല്‍ തല്ലുകയും അപ്പോള്‍ ‘ദിവ്യനായ’ ഒരു മകന് ഉണ്ടാകുകയും ചെയ്തു. തെങ്ങില്‍ നിന്ന് ‘മധു’ എടുക്കുന്ന ജോലിക്കായി അവനെ നിയോഗിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.
പതിവായി ‘മധു’ ശേഖരിക്കുന്ന ദിവ്യനും ‘മധുപാനം’ ആരംഭിച്ചു. ഇതറിഞ്ഞ പരമശിവന് ‘കദളീ വനത്തില്‍’ നായാടരുതെന്നും അവിടത്തെ ‘മധു’ കുടിക്കരുതെന്നും ദിവ്യനെ വിലക്കി. എന്നാല്‍ വിലക്ക് വക വെക്കാതെ കദളീ വനത്തില്‍ നായാടുകയും മധുകുംഭം തുറക്കുകയും ചെയ്ത ദിവ്യന്‍ ശിവകോപത്തിനിരയായി. അവന്റെ കണ്ണുകള്‍ പൊട്ടി അവന്‍ മധുകുംഭത്തില്‍ വീണു.
മാപ്പിരന്ന മകന് പൊയ്ക്കണ്ണ്, മുളംചൂട്ട്, മുള്ളനമ്പ്, മുളവില്ലു എന്നിവ നല്‍കി അനുഗ്രഹിച്ച് ഭൂമിയിലേക്കയച്ചു. എന്നാല്‍ ചൂട്ട് പുകഞ്ഞ് കണ്ണ് കാണാതായപ്പോള്‍ പൊയ്ക്കണ്ണ്, വിത്തുപാത്രം, മുളം ചൂട്ടു എന്നിവ ദിവ്യന്‍ ദൂരേക്ക് വലിച്ച് എറിഞ്ഞു കളഞ്ഞു. അവ ചെന്ന് വീണത്‌ വയനാട്ടിലെ ആദി പറമ്പന്‍ കണ്ണന്റെ പടിഞ്ഞാറ്റയിലാണത്രെ. കണ്ണും ചൂട്ടും തുള്ളുന്നത് കണ്ടു പേടിച്ച കണ്ണനോട് ഇവ രണ്ടും എടുത്തു അകത്ത് വെച്ചു കൊള്ളാന്‍ ദേവന്‍ ദര്‍ശനം നല്‍കി പറഞ്ഞുവത്രേ. ദിവ്യന്‍ വയനാട്ടില്‍ എത്തിചേര്‍ന്നത്‌ കൊണ്ട് വയനാട്ടുകുലവന് എന്നറിയപ്പെടാന്‍ തുടങ്ങിയത്രേ.
വയനാട്ടുകുലവന്റെ മാർ ചമയം അരിച്ചാന്തുകുറിയും മുഖത്തെഴുത്ത് വട്ടക്കണ്ണെഴുത്തും തിരുമുടി കൊതച്ചമുടിയുമാണ്
പൊയ്ക്കണ്ണ്, മുളം ചൂട്ട്, ചെറിയ തിരുമുടി, വട്ടക്കണ്ണിട്ട്മുഖമെഴുത്ത് ഇതൊക്കെയാണ് വേഷവിധാനം. ഒരിക്കല്‍ ഈ ദൈവം വാണവര്‍ കോട്ടയില്‍ എഴുന്നെള്ളിയതായും ദൈവത്തിന്റെ കോലം കെട്ടിയാടണം എന്ന് വാഴുന്നവര്‍ക്ക് സ്വപ്നമുണ്ടായതിന്‍ പ്രകാരമാണ് വയനാട്ടുകുലവന്റെ കോലം കെട്ടിയാടാന്‍ തുടങ്ങിയതത്രെ. തമാശ രൂപത്തില്‍ ഗൌരവമായ കാര്യങ്ങള്‍ പറയുന്ന ഈ തെയ്യത്തിന്റെ ഉരിയാട്ടം വളരെ രസകരമാണ്. ഭക്തര്‍ക്ക് അനുഗ്രഹം നല്‍കുന്ന സമയത്തൊക്കെ ഇത്തരം വാക്കുകളാണ് പറയുക.
“ കണ്ണും കാണൂല്ല, ചെവിയും കേക്കൂല്ല തൊണ്ടച്ചന്,
എന്നാല്‍ കരിമ്പാറമേല്‍ കരിമ്പനിരിയുന്നത്‌ കാണാം,
നെല്ലിച്ചപ്പ് കൂപത്തില്‍ വീഴുന്നത് കേള്‍ക്കാം”
വയനാട്ടു കുലവന്‍ തെയ്യത്തിന്റെ പരിപാവനമായ ഒരു അനുഷ്ഠാനമായി കരുതുന്ന ചടങ്ങാണ് ബോനം കൊടുക്കല്‍. തെയ്യത്തിന്റെ ആട്ടത്തിനൊടുവില്‍ ചൂട്ടു ഒപ്പിച്ച തീയ്യ കാരണവര്‍ തലയില്‍ മുണ്ടിട്ട് അന്ന് ചെത്തിയ കള്ളു പകര്‍ന്നു നല്‍കുന്ന ചടങ്ങാണിത്‌. അന്ന് മലനാടിറങ്ങിയ ദൈവം തന്റെ പ്രഭാവം കൊണ്ട് കുഞ്ഞാലി എന്ന മാപ്പിളയെ രക്ഷിക്കുന്നതും ആ ഭക്തന്റെ ഭോജന സമര്‍പ്പണവുമാണ് ഈ അനുഷ്ഠാനത്തിന്റെ കാതല്‍. പ്രമാദമായ കേസില്‍ അകപ്പെട്ടു കുഞ്ഞാലി കഴുമരം കയറേണ്ടി വരുമെന്നറിഞ്ഞു കണ്ണീരോടെ നടന്നു പോകവേ വയനാട്ടുകുലവന് കുഞ്ഞാലിയെ ആശ്വസിപ്പിച്ചുവത്രേ “ചിറക്കല്‍ തമ്പുരാന്റെ മനസ്സ് മാറും നീ സന്തോഷത്തോടെ തിരിച്ചു വരും വന്നാല്‍ നിന്റെ കയ്യാല്‍ എനിക്കൊരു ബോനം തരണം” കുഞ്ഞാലി സമ്മതിച്ചു. അപ്രകാരം കേസ് ഒഴിഞ്ഞു വന്ന കുഞ്ഞാലിയോട് തനിക്ക് ബോനമായി വേണ്ടത് കള്ളാണ് എന്ന് പറഞ്ഞപ്പോള്‍ തനിക്ക് ഹറാമായ കള്ളു ആരും കാണാതെ ദൈവത്തിനു നല്‍കി. ആ രഹസ്യ സ്വഭാവം കാണിക്കാനാണ് കാരണവര്‍ തലയില്‍ മുണ്ടിടുന്നത്.
യാത്രാപ്രിയനായ വയനാട്ടുകുലവന് വടക്കോട്ട്‌ യാത്ര ചെയ്ത് കണ്ടനാര്‍ കേളന്റെ വീട്ടിലെത്തിയെന്നും ദൈവിക ശക്തി തിരിച്ചറിഞ്ഞ കേളന്‍ വയനാട്ടുകുലവനെ തൊണ്ടച്ചനെന്നു വിളിച്ച് സല്ക്കരിച്ചുവെന്നും അതിനെ അനുസ്മരിക്കുന്നതാണ് കണ്ടനാര്‍ കേളന്‍ തെയ്യത്തിന്റെ ബപ്പിടല്‍ ചടങ്ങ് എന്നും പറയുന്നു.
തെയ്യം കെട്ടിന്റെ രണ്ടാം നാള്‍ ആര്‍പ്പും ആരവങ്ങളുമായി ഭക്തര്‍ കാട്ടില്‍ വെട്ടയ്ക്കിറങ്ങി പന്നി, മാന്‍, കൂരന്‍ തുടങ്ങിയ മൃഗങ്ങളെ വേട്ടയാടി പിടിച്ചു തണ്ടുകളില്‍ കെട്ടി കാവിലേക്ക് കൊണ്ട് വരും. കണ്ടനാര്‍ കേളന്റെ വെള്ളാട്ടം ഉറഞ്ഞാടുന്ന രാത്രിയിലാണ് ഇവര്‍ വരിക. ഇവരെ ആശീര്‍വദിച്ചു നൃത്തം ചെയ്യുന്ന കണ്ടനാര്‍ കേളന്‍ മറയുടെ വടക്ക് വശത്ത് നിരത്തീ വെച്ച ഓല ക്കീറുകളില്‍ മൃഗങ്ങളെ കിടത്തി തന്റെ കയ്യിലെ കന്നിക്കത്തി വീശി ഓരോ മൃഗത്തെയും മൂന്നായി വെട്ടി ക്കീറും. ഈ അനുഷ്ഠാനത്തെയാണ്‌ ബപ്പിടല്‍ എന്ന് പറയുന്നത്. മാംസത്തിലെ കരളും, വലത്തെ തുടയും പ്രത്യേക രീതിയില്‍ വേവിച്ചു (ഓട്ടിറച്ചി, ചുട്ടിറച്ചി, വറുത്തിറച്ചി) വയനാട്ടുകുലവന് നിവേദിക്കുകയും ബാക്കി വരുന്നവ ഭക്തന്മാര്‍ക്ക് പാകം ചെയ്തു പ്രസാദമായി വിളമ്പുകയും ചെയ്യും.
ഈ തെയ്യത്തെ കെട്ടിയാടിക്കുന്ന തറവാട്ടിലെ കാരണവര്‍ തെയ്യത്തിനു സമര്‍പ്പിക്കുന്ന ചൂട്ടു ഈ ദൈവത്തിന്റെ ഉല്പത്തി കഥയുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ടതാണ്. ഭക്തിപൂര്‍വ്വം ചൂട്ടു നല്‍കുന്ന അനുഷടാനമാണ് ചൂട്ടൊപ്പിക്കല്‍. മുക്കാല്‍ കോല്‍ നീളത്തില്‍ പാല്‍ മുളങ്കുറ്റി നേരിയ ചീളുകളായി ചീന്തിയെടുത്ത് തെങ്ങിന്‍ നാരു കൊണ്ട് മുറുക്കിയാണ് ചൂട്ടു കെട്ടുന്നത്. ഇവ നന്നായി എണ്ണയില്‍ മുക്കി ഒന്നാം പരികര്‍മ്മിയുടെ സഹായത്തോടെയാണ് കാരണവര്‍ ഇത് സമര്‍പ്പിക്കുക. പരമശിവന്റെ പുത്രനായ ദിവ്യന്‍ വിലക്ക് മറന്നു മധുവനത്ത്തില്‍ കയറി മധുപാനം നടത്തിയതിനാല്‍ കണ്ണും രണ്ടും പൊട്ടി പോയതാണ്. മകന്റെ സങ്കടം കണ്ടു പൊയ്ക്കണ്ണ്, മുളഞ്ചൂട്ട് എന്നിവ ശിവന് നല്‍കി. എന്നാല്‍ ചൂട്ടു പുകഞ്ഞ് കണ്ണും കണ്ണ് പുകഞ്ഞ് ചൂട്ടും കാണാതായപ്പോള്‍ ദിവ്യന്‍ കണ്ണ് പറിച്ചെറിഞ്ഞു ഒപ്പം ചൂട്ടും. ആ ചൂട്ടു വീണത്‌ വയനാട്ടില്‍ ആദിപറമ്പന്‍ കണ്ണന്റെ വീട്ടു മുറ്റത്തായിരുന്നു. ഇതിനെ അനുസ്മരിക്കുന്ന ചടങ്ങാണ് ചൂട്ടോപ്പിക്കല്‍.
വയനാട്ട് കുലവന്‍ തെയ്യത്തിനു ഭക്തരുടെ മനം കുളിര്‍ക്കും വിധം ഉറഞ്ഞാടാന്‍ വിശാലമായ വയലാണ് ചെത്തിക്കോരി തയ്യാറാക്കുക. പറമ്പിലോ വയലിലോ താല്‍ക്കാലികമായി തെങ്ങോലകള്‍ കൊണ്ട് തയ്യാറാക്കുന്ന പള്ളിയറയാണ് മറ. അതിനകത്താണ് ഭദ്ര ദീപവും, പീഠവും, പള്ളിവാളും ശരക്കോലും പൂജിച്ചു വെക്കുക. വയനാട്ടുകുലവന് തെയ്യം ഉറഞ്ഞാട്ടവും അനുഗ്രഹദാനവും കഴിഞ്ഞു നേരം പാതിരാവോടു അടുക്കുമ്പോള്‍ മറ പിളര്‍ക്കാന്‍ തക്കവണ്ണം ആതം കൊടുക്കട്ടെ എന്നുരിയാടുമ്പോള്‍ തറവാടിലെ ചൂട്ടൊപ്പിച്ച കാരണവരും പ്രധാന കര്‍മ്മിയും അതിനു തയ്യാറാകും. പ്രധാന കര്‍മ്മി ദേവ പ്രാര്‍ത്ഥനയോടെ കത്തികൊണ്ട് മറയുടെ പിന്‍ഭാഗം രണ്ടായി പിളര്ന്നിടും. ഇത് തെയ്യാട്ട സമാപനം കുറിക്കുന്ന ചടങ്ങ് കൂടിയാണ്.
കണ്ണൂര്‍ ജില്ലയിലെ മിക്കയിടങ്ങളിലും വര്ഷം തോറും വയനാട്ടുകുലവന് കെട്ടിയാടുമെങ്കിലും കാസര്‍ഗോഡ്‌ ജില്ലയില്‍ വളരെ വര്‍ഷങ്ങള്‍ കൂടുമ്പോള്‍ മാത്രമേ വയനാട്ടുകുലവന് ദൈവം കെട്ട് ആഘോഷിക്കാറുള്ളൂ. മൂന്നു ദിവസങ്ങളായി നടക്കുന്ന ഇത്തരം ദൈവം കെട്ടിന് മുന്നോടിയായി മറയൂട്ട്, കൂവം അളക്കല്‍, അടയാളം കൊടുക്കല്‍, കലവറ നിറക്കല്‍ എന്നീ പരിപാടികള്‍ ഉണ്ടാവും. ഇത് കഴിഞ്ഞാല്‍ അനുഷ്ഠാനപരമായ ചടങ്ങുകളോടെ വിവിധ സംഘങ്ങളായി കാട്ടിലേക്ക് നായാട്ടിനു പോവുകയും കാട്ടുപന്നി പോലുള്ള മൃഗങ്ങളെ വേട്ടയാടി കൊണ്ടുവരുകയും ചെയ്യും. നിലവില്‍ മൃഗനായാട്ട് കേരള സര്‍ക്കാര്‍ നിരോധിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.
കോട്ടപ്പാറ വീട്ടിൽ വയനാട്ടു കുലവൻ വാണിരുന്ന കാലത്ത് തറവാട്ടിൽ അതി ഭക്തനായ കുഞ്ഞിക്കോരൻ എന്ന കാരണവർ ജീവിച്ചിരുന്നുവത്രേ. ഇദ്ദേഹം കോമരമായിരുന്നു. ഒരിക്കല്‍ ഇദ്ദേഹം അന്ന് തറവാട്ടില്‍ കെട്ടിയാടിയ തെയ്യത്തോടോപ്പം ഉറഞ്ഞാടുകയും ഇഷ്ടദേവന്റെ വെള്ളികെട്ടിയ മുള്ളമ്പു കൊണ്ട് സ്വന്തം നെഞ്ചില്‍ ആഞ്ഞുകുത്തുകയും ജീവിതം ഉപാസനാമൂര്‍ത്തിയുടെ മുന്നില്‍ അവസാനിപ്പിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. നൂറ്റിയറുപതു വര്‍ഷങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് മുമ്പ് നടന്ന കതയാണിതത്രേ. ജീവന്‍ വെടിഞ്ഞ കോരച്ചനെ പിന്നീട് കോരച്ചൻ തെയ്യമാക്കി കെട്ടിയാടാന്‍ തുടങ്ങി.
കാരണവര്‍ (കാർന്നോൻ), കോരച്ചൻ, കണ്ടനാർ കേളൻ തുടങ്ങിയ തെയ്യങ്ങൾ കെട്ടിയാടിയ ശേഷമാണ് വയനാട്ടുകുലവൻ തെയ്യം വരുന്നത്.

Wayanatukulavan is the main worship idol and Adi deity of the Theiya community in North Malabar but this Theiya has positions and forts in Nair and Nambiar clans. People belonging to the Theiya community also call this Theiya as Thondachan Theiya. Thondachan means the most senior person. This theiyam is tied by the Vannan community. This theiyam is offered as prasad with kaungin flower and has three presentation methods namely thottam, vellattam and theiyam. This theyam is more often tied in the tribal houses than in the Kavs. It is believed that this Theyam, who is an old blind person, is the God who will come to the door if called. The slow dance steps of this deity with a melodious rhythm is a must see.
Wayanat Kulavan is said to be the son born when Paramashiva plucked his own braid and hit his left thigh, otherwise Wayanatukulavan is said to be the son whose left thigh burst.
“Madhu” used to come under three black coconut trees that grew in the Madhu forest of Kailasam.
When Lord Shiva in the form of a deer came to the forest to hunt, he saw this and drank Madhu and became mad and Goddess Parvati got scared.
That part is described in Thotam Patt like this:
“Kailasa Lord in the form of a hunter
Puku in the forest for hunting
As soon as he saw it, Karim Tengin Kurumkulamel
Honey is falling and the world is falling
Seeing that, Lord Shiva went near
Shiva became mad after drinking Madhu
When they saw it, they were afraid.”
Shree Parvati began to investigate to know where Lord Shiva, who arrives drunk every day, gets this. Devi realized that the god was drinking from the Madhuvana near Kailasam. Devi decided to stop this. According to it, the god found the black coconuts that he was drinking and Madhu, who was coming out from under them, rubbed them with his mantra power and lifted them up. But the next day Shiva came to drink ‘Madhu’ and could see that ‘Madhu’ had not reached the top of the coconut tree. Enraged at this, Lord Shiva struck his left thigh with his braid and a ‘divine’ son was born. He was assigned to the job of extracting ‘madhu’ from coconuts.
Divyan, who collects ‘Madhu’ regularly, also started ‘Madhupanam’. Knowing this, Lord Shiva forbade the divinity not to wander in the ‘Kadali forest’ and not to drink the ‘madhu’ there. But the divinity who wandered in the Kadali forest and opened the Madhukumbham got angry with Shiva. His eyes burst and he fell into the honey pot.
The apologetic son was blessed with poikann, bamboo shoot, mullanamp and bamboo bow and sent to earth. But when the heat went out and the eye disappeared, the god threw away the pot, the seed pot and the bamboo bowl. They fell in the west of Adi Paramban Kannan in Wayanad. The god gave Darshan and told Kanna, who was scared to see both the eyes and the heat, to take them and keep them inside. Divyan came to Wayanad and came to be known as Wayanat Kulavan.
Poikann, mulam choot, short hair, round face and these are the costumes. Once this god appeared in the fort of Vanavar and the rulers had a dream that they should tie the statue of the god, so they started tying the statue of Wayanatukulavan. The Uriyat of this Theiyat, which tells serious things in a funny form, is very interesting. Say these words while blessing the devotees.
“No eye can see, no ear can hear,
But you can see blackberry on blackberry,
You can hear the paddy falling in the heap”
Bonam giving is a ritual which is considered as a blessing of Wayanat Kulavan Theiyat. At the end of the dance of Theiyam, the Thiiya Karanavar, who signed the Chotudu, will cut their heads and pour the Todhu they made on that day. The heart of this ritual is that the god who came down to the mountains on that day saved the mappila named Kunjali by his influence and the devotee’s offering of food. When Kunjali was walking away with tears knowing that he would have to go to the gallows because he was caught in the wrong case, Wayanatukulavan consoled Kunjali, “Chirakal Lord’s mind will change and you will come back happy. If you come, I will give you a bonus from your hand.” Kunjali agreed. When he told Kunjali that the case was dismissed that he wanted toddy as bonum, he gave the forbidden toddy to God without anyone seeing him. To show that secretive nature, the Paranavars shave their heads.
It is said that Wayanatukulavan, a traveller, traveled north and came to Kandanar Kelan’s house, and knowing the divine power, Kelan entertained Wayanatukulavan by calling him Thondachan, and the baptism ceremony of Kandanar Kelan Theiyat commemorates that.
On the second day of Theyam Khetan, the devotees go hunting in the forest with shouts and noises, hunt animals like pigs, deer and deer and bring them to Kav by tying them to sticks.
They will come in the night when the Vellatam of Kandanar Kelan is falling. After blessing them and dancing, Kandanar Kelan lays the animals on straw kirs lined up on the north side of the mara and cuts each animal in three with a knife in his hand. This ritual is called bapital. The liver and the right thigh of the meat are cooked in a special way (mutton, roast meat) and offered to the Wayanatukula and the rest is cooked and served as prasad to the devotees.
The fire dedicated to the Theiya by the family members who tie this Theiya is related to the story of the origin of this God. Chuttopikan is the ritual of reverently offering heat. The chotu is made by cutting three-quarter feet of milk bamboo sticks into small pieces and tightening them with coconut fiber. Dip these well in oil and offer it with the help of the first Parikarmi. Divya, the son of Lord Shiva forgot the prohibition and went into Madhuvanath and drank honey, so both his eyes were broken. Seeing his son’s grief, Shiva gave Poikann and Mulanchut. But when the eye was smoked by the heat and the eye was smoked by the heat and the heat disappeared, the divine plucked out the eye and the heat. Chethikori will prepare a wide field for the devotees to sleep in a warm way for Wayanat Kulavan Theiyam. Mara is palliara which is temporarily prepared with coconuts in the paddy or field. Inside it, worship the Bhadra Deepa, Peetha, Palliwal and Sharakol. When Wayanatukulavan Theiyam Uranjata and blessings are finished, when he approaches Pathirao, when he chants that he should give atham enough to split the veil, the reasons and the main karma of the family will be ready for it. The back part of the mara is split in two with a knife with a prayer to the main Karmi deva. It is also the ceremony that marks the conclusion of the Teyatta.
In most parts of Kannur district, Wayanatukulavan is tied every year, but in Kasaragod district, Wayanatukulavan is celebrated only every few years. Before this god tying, which takes place for three days, there will be programs of maryut, measuring the kuvam, giving signs and filling the pantry. After this, they go hunting in the forest in different groups with ritualistic ceremonies and hunt and bring back animals like wild boar. At present, the Kerala government has banned Mriganayat.
At the time when the Wayanatu Kulavan was ruling in the Kottapara house, there lived a very pious person named Kunhikoran. He was stupid. Once he went to sleep with Theiya, who was tied up in the palace, stabbed himself in the chest with Ishta Deva’s silver spike and ended his life in front of Upasanamurthy. This is the story that happened one hundred and sixty years ago. Korachan, who had lost his life, then started tying up Korachan.
